Welcome to Derby Middle School

ShipleyOur website will give you an overview of resources and opportunities available for students and parents. This is an exciting time to be a Bulldog as our campus is finishing up a $12 million renovation and expansion project. While there certainly were growing pains, we are encouraged by the positive impact these projects have had on the learning environment for our students. If there is any way we can help improve your experience at Derby Middle School, please give us a call at (316) 788-8580.

NEWS and announcements

Food Friday on a Thursday food drive Click HERE for more information Derby Public Schools, in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, is participating in Food Friday on Thursday on March 2 to benefit Derby Community Family Services (who runs the Derby Food Bank). At this point in the year, the Food Bank is often running low on food items to distribute to those in need. This authentic learning experience is a way to share about the importance of giving back to the community. Last year, we collected nearly 6,000 food items! This year our goal as a district is to reach 7,000 items. This is an exciting opportunity as we get to see our district working all together on this project. Students/Staff/Families donate items, our maintenance staff loads/unloads items from each school and our DTEC and Project SEARCH students sort and count items.

Seeking Community Input in Superintendent Search -
The Board of    Education gave direction at its February 13 meeting to seek feedback on  the type of superintendent the community wants to lead Derby Public  Schools. The Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB) will be assisting  our district in gathering public input. KASB will conduct a series of  characteristics focus group sessions with the community, students, teachers, classified staff and administration to obtain input on what others view as desirable traits of the new leader. KASB has also provided an online survey that will open from 9:00PM on February 13 and close at midnight February 19. Click HERE to view more details and access survey.

Process for Success
Process for Success Update
Community and staff input meetings to discuss the Facilities Master Plan proposal during the months of January and February, along with an online feedback form, provided valuable feedback on the Facilities Master Plan proposal. The Process for Success (PFS) committee reconvened on February 9 to begin carefully reviewing all feedback and to establish the next steps in both short-term and long-term facilities planning within our district. The PFS has asked that sub-committees reconvene to determine if there are additional options and do further research regarding school sizes and academic needs to ensure a Facilities Master Plan proposal is developed that reflects community needs while being a good steward of taxpayer’s dollars. POWER HOUR (formerly known as tutoring) is offered on Mondays and Wednesdays after school from 3:35-4:30. Students who wish to attend should be in the media center no later than 3:35 with any materials needed to complete his/her assignments. Several teachers are available to help with questions from any content level. If students are bus riders, there is an activity bus that will pick them up at 4:30. Students who use POWER HOUR might need to.... re-take a test, make-up a test, complete absent work, finish a project for class, complete homework so it doesn't have to go home, get some extra help with a new or difficult concept, use a computer to complete an assignment for digital studies or JUST SIT AND READ!!
